What We Do

The Buffalo Women is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supporting scholarships for Oglala Lakota students enrolled at The Oglala Lakota College on the Pine Ridge Reservation at Kyle, South Dakota.

Native students face staggering challenges in the quest to complete an education.  Lack of transportation and fuel, high unemployment on the reservation, family struggles, and the lack of funds contribute to high attrition rates in schools.  Education is the key to a Lakota youth's future.  Funds donated for this purpose through The Buffalo Women fund scholarships to Lakota students identified by the Oglala Lakota College Selection Committee; are tax deductible charitable contributions; and go directly to the student for the purpose of sustaining retention in the school.

We are available to make educational presentations to civic and social organizations.  Our presentations include Diversity Day at the Tunxis Community College in Farmington, CT, and Flanders Elementary School Global Awareness Day events, and we have hosted Open House celebrations in Southington and Branford, CT.   In addition, we continuously provide new baby blankets for newborns at the Indian Health Service Hospital in Pine Ridge and have collected and provided basic domestic items to Lakota families living on the reservation.
